Five rebels killed in Helmand offensive

Five Taliban militants were killed during an operation in southern Helmand province on Sunday.

The operation was carried out by the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP) forces in the Tarkha Nawar area of Nawa district, killing five rebels.

Civilians and the Afghan forces stayed unhurt in the operation.

Separately, a key Taliban commander was killed during infighting in the Musa Qala district of Helmand on Sunday.

The Taliban commander was killed as a result of a fire exchange between the fighters on Sunday afternoon in the district.

The Afghan security forces have recently stepped up their military offensive against the Taliban rebels to further beef up security across the country for upcoming presidential and provincial council elections.
