Possible car bomb attack foiled in Helmand

Afghan intelligence operatives have thwarted a possible terrorist attack by seizing an explosives-laden car and three bomb-rigged motorcycles in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of southern Helmand province, the provincial governor said on Tuesday.

The Taliban insurgents planned to target government officials in Lashkar Gah, but their plan has been foiled by the provincial intelligence personnel before, Al haj Muhammad Naeem said.

Four suicide vests, 6 Kalashnikov assault rifles, 2 rockets, 2 machine guns and one 303-cyber gun were recovered from the car.

Naeem said that a huge terrorist bid had been foiled with the seizure of the bomb-rigged car and three explosives-packed motorbikes.

Elsewhere in the Gereshk district, a rebel who attacked on Afghan National Army (ANA) troops several times was captured by the National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives.

In another development, Six-member insurgent group relinquished violence, joined the government-initiated reconciliation programme and laid down arms in this southern Helmand province on Monday.

The former militants were joined the government-backed peace process in Lashkar Gah, the capital on Monday. The former Taliban insurgents were involved in anti- government activities, mostly Gramsir and Khanshin districts of the province, over the past couple of years.

They surrendered 4 different types of weapons and a large quantity of explosives to the provincial governor.

Meanwhile, Helmand governor Muhammad Naeem welcomed the Taliban, who renounced violence and recognised the Afghan constitution, return to normal civilian life. He also called upon other militants to give up fighting and reconcile with the Afghan government-initiated peace and reconciliation process.
