Taliban-fired mortar kills 2 children in Helmand

Two Afghan civilian children were killed and three others wounded when a Taliban-fired mortar shell hit a civilian house in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Sar-I-chai area on the suburbs of the district when the insurgents wanted to hit an Afghan National Police (ANP) forces’ checkpoint.

But the mortar fell inside a house, killing two children and injuring three others.

Extending his deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the bereaved families, the Helmand provincial Governor, Al Haj Muhammad Naeem, condemned the act in the strongest possible terms and prayed for quick recovery of the wounded.

Elsewhere in the province, seven Taliban rebels were killed and one sustained injures as a result of an ongoing military operation in the Gereshk district of Helmand.

The operation was underway in the Mairmandab area and some other parts infested with insurgents, a few days back and still continued, where a policeman was also slightly injured.

The operation was aimed at eliminating poppy fields and improving security ahead of the April elections.
